[Bookplate for John Bonsall Porter] This heraldic bookplate is printed on cream paper with dark brown ink, and consists of an escutcheon, sable (black), charged with three church bells, two over one. Above the escutcheon is a helmet at three quarters profile in esquire form, with mantling radiating from it. Above the helmet is a straight wreath crested by the head of a lion in profile. Above the crest is a banner, with first Latin motto within. Below the escutcheon is another banner, with second Latin motto within. 42. [Bookplate for John C. Brune] This bookplate consists of a pictorial escutcheon. The image is of a stag at speed emerging from the woods. Above the shield is a helmet, front facing with bars, topped with a crest wreath and a rack of antlers. From the sides of the helmet flows elaborate heraldic mantling. 43. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name. This bookplate appears to be a smaller version of BP MUR SL P H475b, but the creator's initials are barely visible amongst the mantling. 44. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. The bookplate designer's initials and the date of creation are hidden among the mantling. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot] This bookplate's design features an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with three roses. Above the escutcheon is an esquire helmet charged with a dexter hand holding a wreath. Decorative floral surrounds the escutcheon with a banner containing bookplate motto. 46. [Bookplate for John Eardley Wilmot] In black ink. A marshalling of 12, this bookplate incorporates several notable charges, including two sets of eagle heads, erased, a leg erased, three garbes, a stag salient with hounds in pursuit, a scythe, three bugle-horns, three maiden's busts, three crosses-crosslet, three mullets and a lion rampant. The escutcheon is surrounded by an ornate, foliage border in the Chippendale style. It is crowned with a peer helmet, set upon a vegetative backdrop. The mantling supports two straight wreathes, charged with a demi-eagle, holding an escalop in its beak (dexter) and a stag courant (sinister). Among the many heraldic armorials depicted, this bookplate includes several identifiable familial crests. The originator's descendants, include, from dexter chief to sinister base, the Wilmot family in armorial one, the Eardley family in armorial three and the Marrow family in armorial seven. The Wilmot family armorial displays a sable (black) background parted per fess, or (gold), with three escalops on the fess, situated between three eagle heads, erased, two over one. The Eardley family armorial is argent (silver), with a chevron, azure (blue), charged with three garbes (sheaves of corn) and in canton gules (red) a fret, or. The Marrow family armorial is azure, parted per fess, or, engrailed, situated between three maiden's busts, two over one. 48. [Bookplate for John George Mortlock by Charles William Sherborn] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a tilted escutcheon and crest framed by an elaborate circular bordure. The escutcheon is divided quarterly ; the first and fourth quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with a fret, azure (blue), and contain a chief, azure, charged with three fleur-de-lis, argent ; the second and third quadrants, sable (black), are charged with three annulets, argent, two over one, and contain a chevron, argent and engrailed. The escutcheon is crested by a closed dexter helmet resting upon the second quadrant, topped by a wreath and a lion sejant, with dexter paw elevated and resting upon a fleur-de-lis, argent. From either side of the helmet flows mantling and a banner which contains the Latin motto. The bordure also contains text. 49. [Bookplate for John Leveson Gower] This heraldic bookplate consists of a escutcheon, divided per cross or quarterly. Quarters one and four are argent (silver) with bars, gules (red) and charged with a cross patonce, sable (black). Quarters two and three are azure (blue) charged with leaves, two over one. The escutcheon is charged with an inescutcheon, argent, charged with a human hand, gules, at centre, which is a symbol of knighthood or baronet. Upon the escutcheon is a grated helmet positioned three-quartered, indicating peer (duke, baron, marquess, earl) status. Upon the helmet is a crest of a mountain lion or wolf, upon a straight wreath. The escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate mantling, and beneath the escutcheon is the bookplate text within an embellished border. 50. [Bookplate for John Wingfield Larking] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, ermine, charged with three heads of wildcats, possibly lions. Above the escutcheon is a closed helmet, placed in profile, denoting the rank of an esquire or a gentleman, from which, elaborate mantling flows. Upon the helmet is a curved wreath, with a crest of a bird, wings elevated and displayed, holding a branch in its beak. 51. [Bookplate for Joseph Bewley] This non-traditional heraldic bookplate consists of a tilted argent (silver) escutcheon with a sable (black) chevron. On the escutcheon are three bird heads, erased, two over one. Atop the shield is an unusually large helmet in profile, topped by a twig with leaves, a crest wreath, and a stag head, erased. From the helmet flows mantling. Above and below the image are banners containing the text. The image and banners are set upon a designed background and framed by a double border. 52. [Bookplate for Joseph Wesley Flavelle by Alexander Scott Carter] This bookplate's design features an escutcheon argent (silver) divided per chevron, sable (black). It is charged with a dexter hand and a six-pointed star. Above the escutcheon is an esquire helmet and that is charged with a winged arm holding a torch. The escutcheon is surrounded by decorative foliage with banners containing bookplate motto and name below. 53. [Bookplate for Ludger Gravel] Printed in blue ink, surrounded by a border composed of three wavy lines, the bookplate features a coat of arms. The Jerusalem Cross is borne in red on a gold field in the chief. The lower shield features Hermes and the Caduceus on a red field. It is topped by a closed helm of gold, in profile. A banner is beneath the coat of arms, as well as the owner’s name. 54. [Bookplate for M. Nazapen] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with three mullets at fess point and a crescent below, held aloft by two cubit arms. The escutcheon is supported by lions, positioned rampant guardant at both dexter and sinister. Above the escutcheon is a helmet, positioned at a direct front view with a grated helm. Upon the helmet is a ducal coronet, from which three large plumes extend, along with elaborate mantling. Above the mantling and supporters are two crests: at dexter, a straight wreath is charged with an arm embowed with armour, clutching a scimitar. At sinister, a straight wreath is charged with arm embowed, clutching a Scottish flag. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 55. [Bookplate for Marcel Godfrey Isaacs by W. P. B.] This heraldric bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black), with a bend, or (gold), and a square charged with the head of a cougar at sinister chief. Above the escutcheon is an esquire helmet, which is charged with a straight wreath and an arm embowed fessways, holding a dagger piercing the head of a cougar. Bookplate owner's name at base. 56. [Bookplate for Maria Anna Grimaldi] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, or (gold), charged with three esquire helmets, sable (black), en profile at fess, and a lion passant below. Above the escutcheon is an esquire helmet, above which is a crest of an armoured arm embowed clutching a curtana, or a pointless sword of mercy. The escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate mantling, and the entire crest by a stylized border. Below the heraldic image is the Latin text. 57. [Bookplate for McLean] In black ink, though somewhat faded, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly, with a gules (red) bordure ; the first and fourth quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with two eagles heads addorsed, gules and erased above a mountain ; the second quadrant, argent, is charged with a dexter arm, gules, holding a cross crosslet fitchy, azure (blue) ; and the third quadrant, argent, is charged with a galley, sable (black), over a fish, azure and naiant (swimming fesswise). The escutcheon is crested by a dexter helmet, open and containing a lion head, topped by a curved wreath and two laurel branches, crossed. From either side of the helmet flows elaborate mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 58. [Bookplate for McRae] Heraldic bookplate. On the argent shield are two mullets (stars) and a rampant gardant lion divided by a fess. Above the shield is mantling and a closed helmet in profile (signifying either esquire or gentleman) ; above this is a dexter arm arising from a wreath and holding a dagger. Below the shield is a ribbon with the motto "fortitudine" (with fortitude). 59. [Bookplate for Otto Braun and Michael B. Kunze by F. Nickel] In brown in on tan paper. Shield in upper left hand corner above which is mantling and a closed helmet in profile, indicating equires and gentlement. Three fusils vert on centre of shield. Bottom and right hand side of plate decorated with scales, compass and triangle. Artist's mark outside bottom right hand corner.`. 60. [Bookplate for Philip Robert Lyman] This bookplate features a gules (red) escutcheon divided per chevron, argent (silver), charged with a gules (red) annulet. Above the escutcheon rests an esquire helmet, which is charged with a bull.
